Scented Pot Holder Sewing Project Instructions

Scented Pot HolderScented pot holders are a wonderful way to add fragrance to a room and to protect your table or kitchen counter at the same time. Often a pot is too hot to put directly on a table or counter top. The solution is simple: put the pot on a scented pot holder. They are very easy to make! Plus, they are wonderful gifts for both Christmas and birthdays.

First start by gathering all the materials that you will need for this project. You will need:

Inner LayerNext, start on the inside layer. Create a sandwich like layer, with the batting in the middle and a piece of linen on both sides. Attach the layers together by sewing around the edges on only three sides. Take the side that has been left open and pour in a small amount of potpourri. Don't try adding in the potpourri earlier, as it could spill out everywhere. Once the potpourri has been added, then sew together the edges on the fourth side. The inside layer of your scented pot holder is now finished.

Inner Layer inside Outer LayerNow you are ready to create the outer layer. First start by ironing the whole piece of decorative material. Next, the top and bottom edges will be folder over ½ inch and ironed in place. To find the top edge, place the material wrong side up on the ironing board, so that it is longer than it is wide. At the top of the long side, fold the material over ½ inch, so that the wrong sides of the fabric are facing each other and the right side of the fabric is facing up. Iron the fabric in place. Then do the same for the bottom edge. This will create an even edge on the finished piece, without showing any seams.

The last step in creating the outer layer is to sew the edges together. Begin by laying out the material with the right side facing up. Then fold the bottom of the material up 5 ½ inches, so that the wrong side is now facing up. Then fold the top over by 6 inches. The top of the fabric should cover part of the bottom edge. At this point, it is important to measure the height of the outer layer. Make sure it is 9 inches tall. If you need to, adjust the top until the height is 9 inches. Then pin the sides together and sew them in place.

Once you have finished sewing the edges, you are ready to assemble the scented pot holder! Simply turn the outer layer inside out. Then place the inner layer into the "pocket" at the back of the outer layer and fold it into the other side of the pocket. Smooth out the inner layer until it lays flat within the outer layer. You have now created your very own scented pot holder!
