Pot Holders Sewing Project Instructions

Pot Holders Sewing ProjectHere are the instructions to make one pot holder. To make more than one, simply repeat the instructions. Before you start, be sure to read through the complete set of instructions and gather all the materials necessary.

Supplies Needed:

For the fabric, you will need to choose three different colours. They should be complimentary but as long as you like the combination of colours, that is all that matters.

The first part you will start working on is the middle of the pot holder. First start by cutting out a square from the batting that will measure 6 ½ inches long by 6 ½ inches wide. Then select two of the pieces of fabric. From each piece of fabric, cut out a square that is also 6 ½ inches long and 6 ½ inches wide.

Next, using the fabric chalk, draw diagonal lines on the wrong side of the two pieces of fabric that you have just cut. The lines should be evenly spaced and should go in two directions: one direction should go from the top left corner to the bottom right corner and the other should go from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. Once the lines have been drawn, you will need to sew a straight stitch over the lines. Do one piece at a time because you do not want to sew the two pieces together just yet.

You are now ready to work with the third piece of fabric. From this piece, you will need to cut it into five strips. Cut the first strip so that it is 2 inches long by ¾ of an inch wide. This piece will form a loop from which the pot holder can be hung in a cupboard. Fold the piece in half along the length of the strip, so that it is longer than it is wide, and sew the edges together. Then set the loop aside so that you can work on it later. Next, cut out four strips that are 6 ½ inches long by 1 ½ inches wide. These four strips will form the border around the edges of the pot holder.

For this step, you will be attaching the border to the middle pieces. Start by lining up the middle pieces in the following order: first a fabric square, then the batting square and finally the other fabric square. Once you have lined up the pieces, the right side of the fabric should be on the outside, with the batting in the middle (touching the wrong side of the fabric). Next, sew one side of one of the strips to the top of the squares. Continue sewing the strips to all sides of the squares. Next, you will fold each strip over and hand sew it to the other side of the pot holder. Fold the fabric at the corners, so that it creates a diagonal line and then hand sew the corners together.

The final step is to attach the loop that you had created earlier to the back of the pot holder. You can attach it to either a corner or in the middle of the top border by hand sewing it in place.

You now have a wonderful pot holder that you can use to hold onto the handles of pots or to place warm pots on top of.
