Garter Stitch Scarf Project Instructions

The garter stitch is the first stitch most people learn to knit. The garter stitch is simply knitting the knit stitch for every row. It's the simplest stitch to do, but is very pretty and can be used for a lot of different projects.

Despite its simplicity, the garter stitch can create beautiful looking knitted projects, like this Garter Stitch Scarf. This scarf was knitted twice and each time a different yarn was used. This was done to show how easy it is to change the look, yet still use the same knitting stitch, by simply changing the needle size and the yarn used.

Lacey Garter Stitch ScarfScarf #1 – Lacy Blue

Supplies Needed:

For this first scarf, I used Bernat's Cool crochet thread, which is actually a thick crochet thread. By using this combination of yarn and needle size, it gives a lacy and delicate look to the scarf.

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 30 stitches.
  2. Complete the scarf in garter stitch until it is 55 inches long or the desired length.
  3. Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a tail of about 4 inches. Use the darning needle to weave in the tails.

Warm Garter Stitch ScarfScarf #2 – Thick and Warm

Supplies Needed:

By using a chunkier yarn and smaller needles, the end result is a thicker scarf, which will help keep you warm in cold weather.

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 30 stitches.
  2. Complete the scarf in garter stitch until it is 55 inches long or the desired length.
  3. Bind off. Cut yarn, leaving a tail of about 4 inches. Use the darning needle to weave in the tails.

Note: Since this scarf is knitted with a chunkier yarn, it will be 8 inches wide. For a narrower scarf, just cast on less stitches.

This scarf is perfect for experimenting with because the stitch is quick and easy to do. Make changes to the pattern (for example, cast on 24 stitches) and knit five rows. If you don't like the width, simply take the yarn off the needles and pull on the yarn to remove your stitches. Then try again until you are happy with the width of the scarf.
