A
childhood favourite of many was pinwheels. All you had to do was hold them
up to the wind or gently blow on them and watch them spin around and around.
Help to recreate these fun childhood memories for your children by showing
them how to make their very own pinwheels. Here’s how.
Supplies Needed:
Start by cutting out a 6" x 6" square from the construction paper. Next, on the square, draw two diagonal lines; with one going from the bottom left corner to the top right corner and the second line going from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. Then, draw a small circle in the middle of the square.
You are now ready to cut out the pinwheels. Start by cutting along the diagonal lines, going from the outer edge to just outside of the circle. Make sure not to cut the lines within the circle.
Next, you will be turning the outside edges into the middle. Hold one corner and gently turn it towards the middle of the square. As you bring the edge of the corner towards the middle, you can poke the thumbtack through the corner. The thumbtack will be used to keep the pinwheel in place. Repeat this step for the remaining three corners, pinning each one underneath the corners you have already folded over.
Once all four corners have been turned towards the middle and are being held together by the thumbtack, you are ready to attach the paper to the pencil. Do this by gently pushing the thumbtack into the eraser of the pencil. Don't push the thumbtack all the way into the pencil; make sure to leave just enough room so that the pinwheel can turn easily. Spin the pinwheel gently and adjust the thumbtack as needed.
Finally, let your children decorate the pinwheel with stickers, glitter glue or paint. They can use anything that is lightweight and won't prevent the pinwheel from spinning. Now you're ready to go outside and enjoy your pinwheels in the wind!
