Fabric Shower Curtain Project Instructions

Fabric Shower Curtain Project InstructionsCreating your own custom fabric shower curtain is very easy.

For this project, you will need:

To begin, first measure the length and width of the opening to the shower stall. Multiply the width by 1.25. You now know the width and length of the fabric that you need to buy. The next step is to buy the fabric, matching thread, decorative shower hooks, a shower curtain liner, the grommets and the grommet tool, if necessary, plus any of the supplies mentioned above that you don’t already have.

You are now ready to sew the fabric. Begin by folding the sides of the fabric over ¼ inch, right side over to the wrong side and hem in place using a straight stitch. Next, fold the top over 1-½ inches, again placing the right side over the wrong side, and hem in place using a straight stitch. To give the top extra strength, sew a straight stitch ¼ of an inch below the top of the fabric. Hint: Before sewing the hems, you may find it easier to first fold the fabric over and iron it into position. Just make sure to check the care label on the fabric before ironing, as certain fabrics can only tolerate a low heat setting.

Once the top has been hemmed, you are now ready to attach the grommets. Place your fabric on a table with the wrong side facing up. Next, place the shower curtain liner over the fabric and line up the tops. Using a fabric pencil, mark the holes of the liner on the fabric. Put the liner aside. Follow the directions that come with the grommet tool and attach the grommets to the fabric at the positions you have just marked.

The final step is to hem the bottom of the fabric shower curtain. The bottom should hang just above the step to the shower stall. To find the exact length, hang the fabric shower curtain up. Next, place pins in the fabric, where the fabric just touches the step. Take the shower curtain down and cut the fabric where it has pinned. Using a straight stitch, hem the bottom ¼ inch, right side over the wrong side. Finally, hang up the fabric shower curtain and the shower curtain liner, using the decorative shower hooks.

You now have a beautiful customized and professional looking fabric shower curtain.
