Do you have a cross stitch project that you want to frame? I bet you that the first way you think of framing it is to put it in a picture frame. Was I right? If you want to make your cross stitch piece extra special or even if you just want to try something different, here are some framing ideas just for you!
Some picture albums allow you to place your own picture in a pocket on the cover of the album. Once you have finished your cross stitch project, cut it to size and slip it in this pocket. This works especially well when the album is full of pictures of other cross stitch projects you have finished.
Hoop frames are easy to use and they look great. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes, such as circles, ovals and hearts. They usually don't have any glass, so this gives you the freedom to add beads or charms to your cross stitching. As well, you can add stuffing to the backing, which will give a more three dimensional look to the piece. If you want to add a more personal touch, you can add lace or another fabric to the back of the frame.
Shadow boxes are essentially picture frames that have a lot of space between the glass and the back of the frame. The great thing about having this extra space in the shadow box, is that you can add decorations and embellishments not only to your cross stitching but to the inside of the frame as well. Try adding a decoration or piece of memorabilia that compliments an element found in the cross stitching. For example, if the scene is about seashells, then add some seashells to the bottom of the box. This idea to sure to receive lots of compliments from everyone who stops to admire your work!
With this idea, you will actually need to cross stitch your design directly onto the napkin, tablecloth or pillowcase. They are perfect for small patterns and samplers, such as flowers. Check out our sampler patterns for ideas. They make wonderful gifts, if you can bear to part with them!
Now I know you're looking for something different, but even a classic can be improved on! Picture frames these days come in such a variety of shapes, sizes and colours that you are sure to find one unique enough to fit your needs. Even if you go with a simple frame, you can still dress it up. One way is to add your own embellishments, such as beads, seashells, buttons or stickers to the frame using a hot glut: gun. Another idea is to cover the frame with fabric, preferably one that will highlight a colour in your cross stitched piece. Plus, the main benefit of a picture frame is that the glass will protect the cross stitching from dust, dirt, pet hair and other elements found in your house.
