How To Make Patio Furniture Seat Cushions

Seat cushions are wonderful because they provide comfort and add a splash of colour to your outdoor furniture. Yet, it can be frustrating to find a cushion that is the right size, thickness and has the colours you want. The solution? Make your own patio seat cushions. They are easy to make and best of all, they'll be exactly what you want!

Start by gathering all the supplies that you will need. For this example, we will be making seat cushions that are 18" x 18" and all the measurements given will be for making a cushion of that size. Here is a list of the supplies you need:

Important Note: When you go to buy your material, make sure that it is suitable for being outdoors. Most material is fine when it is indoors, but when it is outside all the time, it will be exposed to rain and sun. Therefore, the material should say that it is mildew and mold resistant. The material should also be thick, so that it is able to withstand a bit of wear.

In terms of choosing colours, you have two options. The material can be the same for both sides or you can choose two different patterns. If you choose different patterns, then you can simply flip the cushion over and voila! You have a totally different look. One side could be strips and the other side could be a floral pattern. If you can, try to match at least one colour in both patterns, so that they will complement each other.

Now that you have gathered your material, you are ready to start making the seat cushions. Place the two large pieces of material together, wrong side facing out. Sew three of the edges together and then turn the cover inside out. Slip the foam into the cover.

The next step is to create tie strings for the back end. Choose material that is either the same colour or choose a complimentary, solid colour. Then cut 4 pieces from the material, so that each piece is 1" wide and 12" long. Work on one piece at a time – first fold it in half (so now it will only be 1/2" wide) and then sew the edges together.

You are now ready to attach the tie strings and sew the back of the cushion shut. First, place the tie strings in place, with two at each end. Finally, sew the back edges together.

If you prefer, you can sew a zipper or Velcro at the back of the cushion to keep it shut, instead of sewing the material together. This way, you can always slip the cover off the foam inside and put the cover in the wash or even change covers.

Finally and most importantly, enjoy your new custom made patio seat cushions and show them off with pride!
