Essential Sewing Supplies You Can't Do Without

Sewing is a very popular hobby because it is practical and relaxing. Not only can you save money, but it allows you to customize any project to your personal tastes. No matter what project you are working on, they all require the same basic set of tools and supplies. Here's a list of the top 10 supplies you need when sewing and what to look for when you are buying them.

Sewing Machine

You could sew by hand, but a sewing machine will save you so much time. Before you buy one, make sure to check out some reviews on the model to get other people's opinions and to learn how reliable the machine will be. Also, if you can, try the machine before you buy it to ensure that you are comfortable using it. Finally, read the manual to learn how to use all the different features of your machine so that you can get the most out of it.

Thread

Thread has to be one of the most important supplies in sewing, because it holds everything together. Therefore, you want to make sure that you buy high quality thread that won't break or tangle. Other than quality, the other factor is selecting thread is choosing what colour to use. When buying thread, bring a sample of the fabric you will be sewing so that you can match the colours as close as possible. If the fabric has multiple colours in it, try choosing thread that matches the most dominant colour of the fabric.

Fabric

Before buying any fabric, make sure to take note of the care instructions for the fabric. You don't want to ruin the fabric, or worse your finished project, because you didn't wash or dry it the way you were suppose to. As well, each fabric has its own qualities and characteristics that can influence how you work with it. If you're not sure, ask the sales associate to help you.

Scissors

Good quality scissors allow you to cut straight, no matter how thick the material. They really do make a huge difference. If your scissors are dull or hard to cut with, replace them now! It's a small investment that's worth every penny!

Measuring Tape and Ruler

It's good to have two different types of measuring tapes. One should be flexible, so that it's easy to measure around curves, especially when you are sewing clothing. The other should be hard, so that you can get an accurate measurement of longer lengths, for example curtains. As well, make sure to have a ruler on hand. Rulers are very helpful for drawing straight lines to cut along, for example quilt squares or pillow cases.

Pins

When selecting pins, look at the size of the pin head and how long the pin actually is. You may want to pretend that you are actually using the pin before buying it, to ensure that you will feel comfortable using it. Personally, I like a larger pin head because then I can easily see where the pin is.

Storage

All your supplies need to be kept somewhere that not only protects your supplies from potential damage, but also allows you to easily see what you have and get to it quickly. Containers with dividers are excellent for storing smaller supplies, while baskets or drawers are excellent for storing bigger and bulkier items. Feel free to experiment with different types of storage options and see which ones work best for you. If it doesn't work, then get rid of it and find something that does.

Needles

There are different types of needles, with each type being suited for a particular type of fabric. Thicker fabrics, like denim, require a thick, strong and very sharp needle that can go through the fabric. Delicate fabrics, like satin, require thin, smaller needles that won't snag or tear the material. Regardless of the type of material that you're sewing, your needle should always be sharp and straight. Needles that are dull or bent can skip stitches, or worse, break and injure you.

Iron and Ironing Board

The last step of any project is to iron the material. This will give your project a clean, crisp and professional look. Just make sure to adjust the temperature of your iron to the fabric, as some fabrics will actually melt if exposed to high temperatures.

Patterns

You can find a pattern for almost anything that you want to sew. Patterns exist for all skill levels – ranging from simple to very complex. When buying a pattern, be sure to match it to your skill level. As well, the pattern will tell you the best types of fabric to use, how much fabric to buy and any other supplies, such as zippers, that you will need.
