I use to have one large metal container to store all my cross stitching floss in. It didn't take up much room, which was great, but it was a pain whenever I had to find a certain floss colour. Sometimes I couldn't be bothered to search through it all, so I would just go and buy the colour. Then the next time I was looking through my floss colours, I discovered that I had three or even four of the same colour. Finally, I decided that I needed to take a few minutes to organize my floss collection.
Here's how I organized my floss. I bought a few storage containers that have five rows of clear plastic drawers. There are six separate drawers in each row and they are the perfect size to store cross stitch floss in. Plus, since the drawers are clear, I can see what colours are inside each one. At the top of each drawer, I put a label with the DMC number of the floss colour inside the drawer. The labels are in numerical order, so it's easy to find the number I'm looking for. Then, I simply went through each colour and put it in the drawer with the corresponding number. Now I can find any colour I'm looking for in literally two seconds.
If you have more than one brand of floss, you can still store them all in the same container. Most patterns will list the colours by DMC number, so it is probably best to organize your floss by DMC number. Use a cross stitch floss conversion chart to help you figure out what the DMC number is for each colour you have in a different brand, such as J&P Coats or Anchor. Then simply place the other brand of floss in the drawer with the corresponding DMC number.
